Jaguar History

Jaguar_historyJaguar Cars is a british car manufacturer that specializes in the production of a class “lux” cars. Since 2008, owned by Indian company Tata Motors.

The company was founded in 20s of XX century. At that time it was the Swallow Sidecar company, which produced wheelchairs for motorcycles. It did not bring much income, then the company changed its specialization to the production of components for the Austin 7.


In 1927 the company completed a big order and a good revenue allowed to expand its production and start manufacturing of car parts for Fiat 509A, Morris Cowley, Wolseley Hornet, and then began to design and develop it’s own new models of cars.

Most popular models were Jaguar SS90 and Jaguar SS100, named by the company founder William Lyons.

In the middle of the XX century, the company changed its name to Jaguar, as the initials SS were associated after the war with the Nazi regime.

At the same time Jaguar Mk VII appeared, with the increased engine power up to 190 horsepower.

In 1950 Jaguar began working with the Daimler Motor Company, which also produced luxury cars. Since 1960, Daimler became part of Jaguar. The company itself, which experienced difficulties with sales in 1966, started working and became a part of British Motors. Since that time, the Jaguar model became more and more popular.

By the 1960s, Jaguar concern hit the American market with Jaguar XK150 and XK150 Roadster models with an engine capacity up to 3.4 liters.

From the 1960s to the 1980s the company developed some series of sports cars and sedans, which were sold at high prices and had an increased quality.

From 1968 to 1983 the following models were produced: Jaguar XJ8 – sedan, XJR 4.0 Supercharged, Jaguar XJ-C – Coupe, Jaguar XJ-S – it was first model with AJ6 engine. In 1988 the company presented a new model, which again became widely known – Jaguar XJ220, but later it was modified and shown at Tokyo Auto Show.

In the late 1980s the subsidiary company Jaguar Sport was established, which produced sports car models. At the same time Jaguar firm became a branch of the Ford.

In 2000-2004 Jaguar car brand again joined the Formula 1 racing as a team “Jaguar”, using the Cosworth engines. Especially for this, new model cars F-Type Concept and Silverstone were produced.
