Maserati History

Maserati_historyMaserati is an italian company specializing in the production of comfortable sports cars with good looks and high dynamic performance. It’s a part of the largest italian Car Corporation “FIAT”.

Each of the brothers Maserati – Carlo, Bindo, Alfieri, Mario, Ettore and Ernesto – in one way or another, contributed to the development of a company.

Carlo, the eldest of the brothers, first in his family built the Maserati car, equipped with a single-cylinder engine. But the disease and the subsequent death of a 29-year Carlo Maserati interrupted the work.

December 14, 1914 Alfieri Maserati founded the Officine Alfieri Maserati company. The main activity of the new enterprise was to develop cars and engines. The company was located in Bologna, where the main square had a statue of Neptune. Inspired by this work, Mario Maserati developed a brand of the company – a trident.

In 1937 the brothers sold the “Maserati” company to Orsi family, which in 1940 transferred the headquarters of the company to Modena. Orsi family started to produce sports cars exclusively. The brothers continued to work in company as engineers on the basis of a ten-year contract.

In 1968 the company was sold to “Citroen”.

In 1970 Maserati line consisted of well-known and prestigious models: coupe Maserati Merak with V6 engine, Maserati Bora with V8 engine, Maserati Khamsin with V8 engine and a luxury sedan Maserati Quattroporte with V8 engine. However, oil crisis of 1970s crucially affected the sports cars market. In 1974 the “Citroen” company was forced to begin bankruptcy proceedings, and May 23, 1975 a new management company PSA Peugeot Citroen, which controlled “Maserati”, announced its removal.

In 1975, the “Maserati” company was bought by a well-known racer and designer Alessandro de Tomaso. New Maserati models were introduced in 1976: Maserati Kyalami and Maserati Quattroporte III.

In 1982 the company created a new rather cheap model Maserati Biturbo with V6 engine.

In May 1993, the “Maserati” company was sold to the FIAT concern.

In 1999 a new chapter of “Maserati” history was opened with a new 3200 GT car model. It was a coupe auto, equipped with a V8 engine of 3.2 liter capacity. The maximum speed of the car was 285 km / h (177 miles / hour).

In 1997, FIAT passed 50% of “Maserati” shares to the “Ferrari” (at that time also controlled by FIAT concern). In 1999 the “Ferrari” had full control over the company and transformed the “Maserati” in to the luxury cars department.

In 2011 Maserati presented its first crossover Kubang.
